The parrotlet.net Guide To
Your New Parrotlet

Diet

Parrotlets have huge appetites! Good nutrition is very important for your bird. Use a cockatiel mix, which is not heavy on sunflower seeds. An average parrotlet may eat as much as 1/4 cup of seeds daily. Seed should always be available.

I make a mixture of cooked brown or white rice mixed with chopped vegetables. Give your parrotlet a separate dish with a heaping tablespoon of the mixture. Wash all fresh fruits and vegetables. I chop the veggies in a small food processor. You can use broccoli, kale, carrots, yellow squash and zucchini, add an apple or a few cranberries to this mixture. Mix well and keep in a Tupperware with papertowels to absorb the moisture. Turn container upside down. Change papertowel each time you open. You can make enough for 3 days. You can freeze this mixture in an ice cube tray, put the cubes in a ziplock bag and just defrost a cube as needed. Also give him large pieces of leafy greens and chunks of broccoli. Do not leave fresh food in the cage overnight.

Tofu, hard cheeses, cooked beans and chopped hard-boiled eggs are high in protein and important during molting. Make sure that you do not leave these in the cage more an hour. You can use cooked mixed vegetables. I use Roudybush maintenance crumbles in a separate dish.

Scott Pet Products makes a product called Petamine that I also use. Use a small crock for water. Remember, if the food is healthy for you, than it.s healthy for your bird, with the exception of avocado, chocolate, honey and junk food.
