Your New Parrotlet
The first few days are an adjustment period for your new bird. Remember you have just changed his whole life! Everything is new and different for him.
Refrain from handling him the first day. Take him out of his cage only 15 minutes at a time, 3 times a day for the first two weeks. This is very important. You can over-handle these birds and they will become stressed and stop eating.
Make sure that there is water and food located near the top perch. White paper towels should be used on the bottom of the cage for the first week, change daily. Monitor his droppings to make sure he is eating.
Your new parrotlet probably will not want to willingly come out of the cage during the first week and he may be timid or afraid during the adjustment period. Offer your index finger at his breast and say "UP". If he does not step on, be patient and gently grab him, talking softly to him. Take him away from his cage and have him do five or six step-ups.
